The History of the Bra

The History of the Bra
The Bra, a man made device used to shape woman's breasts has also shaped the fashion world and modern sex appeal over the years. The Bra is an every day commodity that most women over the age of thirteen can not do with out, they have changed incredibly over the ages, and represent support, style and sophistication. The first Bra resembling garment appeared in 2500 B.C. when warrior Minoan woman on the isle of Crete began wearing a garment that pushed their bare breasts upward and exposed them from their clothing.

The ancient Greeks and Romans also made use of a Bra like device. Breasts were wrapped and flattened to minimize their size as society grew more male orientated. However the use of the Bra changed with mans attitude towards the female bosom and women were at the mercy of the fashion of the day which in those times was commonly decided by men. This eventually led to the use of corsets which affected woman's health due to their restricting nature. Women often suffered miscarriages as everyday use of the corset led to misplaced organs and internal bleeding.

However during the 19th Century women started to stand up for themselves, women began a movement for more comfortable underwear, and corsets were eventually ruled out. The Bra in its modern incarnation didn't debut until the early 20th century when Mary Phelps Jacob created a Bra out of two silk handkerchiefs, some pink ribbon and thread, and subsequently nabbed the first U.S. patent in 1914. When WW1 broke out and women began entering the workforce the modern Bra became indispensable as it granted female workers mobility and independence and from then on it became adapted to suit different fashions. In the 20s women used the Bra to flatten themselves and achieve androgynous figures such as flappers and suffragettes and later on, Lana Turner's prominent breasts in a clingy cashmere top created a demand for fake breasts.........

Construction Worker Fashion

Construction Worker Fashion

I had never seen any construction worker fashion like it before I came to Japan. The bizarre MC Hammer-style puffy pants that suddenly tighten around the ankles, making it look a bit Arabian Nights. Then there's the tabi boots which I've already started a collection of.

PingMag's Kyoko has written a great article on the hows and whys and where-do-I-buy-froms of Japanese construction worker fashion. Have a read for and have a gawk at their Flickr gallery too.

I am *so* getting those gold tabi boots.........

The Fashion Police

The Fashion Police
Casually doing a bit of window shopping a few years back in one of Italy's 'oh so fashionable' little lane ways, I noticed that pointy toe stiletto's were everywhere. Glancing down at my round toe Mary Jane's I'd just purchased before leaving Australia, I was feeling both repulsed and anxious. Repulsed because I thought pointy toe stiletto's were ugly, and anxious because I knew it was only a matter of time before I would be forking out the lire to purchase them. Two weeks later, I had succumbed. The trend had gotten the better of me, despite how ridiculous I looked when the heels got caught in the uneven Italian pavement every time I walked down the street (which was about every three steps).

So what was it that changed my mind? I believe the answer lies in the hands of, well, a handful of people called 'Trend Analysts' AKA The Fashion Police. Their job: to serve and protect the commercial interests of fashion companies across the globe. How? By dissecting the public's psychology of what will be the next trend will be by way of extensive travel and shopping expeditions (those bastards). These 'trend analysts' then report back to analysis companies, who then go on to consolidate their findings in industry magazines and websites for the use of fashion companies.

I'd like to say that fashion companies use analysis companies because they're lazy, but it's certainly not the case. They're just scared to make a mistake (can you imagine manufacturing 1000 pairs of high waisted skinny leg jeans only to find that everyone was going for low rise bootleg? Ebay auctioning them is NOT a solution here). There are also unbelievable time constraints between the seasons. So most designers design their range around what they are fed, and if they're lucky they get to travel around Europe and Japan to buy garments to 'take inspiration from'. This is why we get a slight variation of the trend theme every season; all our designers are shopping in the same store in London! If you want to see something really interesting, just observe the women with suitcases in major department stores buying size ten (when they are size 12) at the start of every season. Ask them what they do for a living.........

Tokyo Street Style

Tokyo Street Style

There are a number of websites on the internet dedicated to Japanese fashion and street fashion. Most are trying to sell you clothes or photos or have dozens of pop-ups. This page is different because it's run by the JFA - Japanese Fashion Association, a registered organisation that aims to promote Japanese (and recently, Asian) fashion to the rest of the world.

Every week there are new photos categorised by the fashion hotspots around Tokyo of Shibuya, Harajuku, Ginza, Omotesando and Daikanyama. Great photos and a great way to watch how fashion evolves in Tokyo. Best of all, it's in English.........

Girl to Ghost: hologram of model in fashion runway show

Girl to Ghost: hologram of model in fashion runway show

For the finale of Alexander McQueen's runway show last week, Kate Moss appeared as a hologram:.

"Inside an empty glass pyramid, a mysterious puff of white smoke appeared from nowhere and spun in midair, slowly resolving itself into the moving, twisting shape of a woman enveloped in the billowing folds of a white dress. It was Kate Moss, her blonde hair and pale arms trailing in a dream-like apparition of fragility and beauty that danced for a few seconds, then shrank and dematerialized into the ether."........

    Braces Boost Self-esteem

    Braces Boost Self-esteem
Orthodontics are often necessary to help improve the stability, function, and health of an individual's teeth; otherwise, a number of people would be at higher risk for gum disease, tooth decay, and tooth loss because of improper teeth positioning in their mouth, as per an article in the January 2006 issue of AGD Impact, the newsmagazine of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD).

"Orthodontics can make people feel better about themselves," says James G. Richeson, Jr., DDS, FAGD, AGD spokesperson. "A number of patients, previous to orthodontics, smile with their mouth closed, because they are self-conscious about their teeth, but after orthodontics, they commonly smile naturally, showing off their new look."

General dentists can assess a child's need for orthodontics or alternative therapys. A dentist commonly recommends braces to improve the patient's physical facial appearance. Through orthodontic therapy, problems like crooked or crowded teeth, overbites or underbites, incorrect jaw position, and disorders of the jaw joint can be corrected.

Alternative orthodontic therapys have long been available, but may not always be as comprehensive as orthodontics. Space maintainers help maintain space for adult teeth and can prevent complications and the need for more orthodontic treatment. Removable computer-generated appliances can treat selective cases where orthodontics would otherwise be needed, but these appliances also may cost more. Removable appliances that use wires also are available but their use depends on the complexity of the case and what needs to be achieved in the movement of the patient's teeth. A palatal expander is often used in cases where the upper arch isn't spreading as wide as it needs to, says Dr. Richeson, and such an appliance is utilized to expand that arch. The palatal expander is best used while a child is still growing, commonly between ages 8 and 10.........

    London Fashion Week parties

    London Fashion Week parties

LFW is as synonymous with directional design as it is with rousing parties and decadent events, and this season was no exception. Champagne flowed in abundance throughout the week's events (starting at 9.30 am at most shows). The parties started with Patrick Cox's luncheon at the Sanderson Hotel, where his new muse Elizabeth Hurley - star of his spring summer ad campaign - co-hosted a stylish lunch. Julian MacDonald's after-show party, where the now infamous anti-fur campaign featuring a scantily-clad Paris Hilton took place, was held in Cocoon.

Other events included the Lulu Guiness Couture bash at the Baglioni Hotel, where models such as Elizabeth Jagger danced the night away.........

    Anima Causa Feel Seating System

seating_cool.jpgThe Anima Causa “Feel” Seating System is made of 120 elastic fabric-covered balls that move around with you, changing their form with what the designer calls “the emotional state of the body.” Inspired by molecular structures, it can be arranged in a nearly unlimited number of positions. Fold it up into a seat, lay it flat as a bed, or wrap it around you. Looks like fun. Check out the animation on the company's website. If you want to know how much it costs, well, they'll get back to you.
