Uk History Does The 60s

Uk History Does The 60s
I never pay much attention to UK History - a bit too much World At War and ancient Rome for my liking - but starting next week, that changes - if only for a short time.

The channel is going big on the 60s. Slipped into the schedules at various points from next week (W/C 10th July) are the BBC's Fame, Fashion and Photography documentaries (including The Real Blow Up), along with a less-interesting programme on the Beatles.

But next Saturday (15th July) seems the day to tune in. I have no idea what the series of shows "Sixties Interstitials" is, but there seems to be huge selection of programmes showing all day under that name, with show titles such as "The Pill", "Swinging Britain: 1965-1966", "Street Fighting Years: 1967 -1968", "Brits Storm US Pop Charts", "Lady Chatterley", "The Party is Over: 1969 - 1970", "Teenage Rebels: 1960-1961", "Sex, Spies and Rock and Roll: 1962-1964", "Women Fight Back - Germaine Greer", "Marriage Under Attack", "White Heat of Technology (Concorde)" and "England Swings".

Chances are much of it will not live up to the billing - but we'll not know unless we tune in.or set the recorder for most of the day.........

Retro Tea Towel bag

Retro Tea Towel bag
Here's something that looks very "now", but is actually made from a vintage cloth. The Tea Towel bag is a rather hip-looking handbag from mandy b. bags, made from genuine vintage 100% linen tea towel.

The design features two corked and long-necked decanters with a swirling pattern on a tri-colored background of "golden yellow, brick red, and merlot". The coloured pattern is repeated on the reverse of the bag,.

The handle is a tortise shell with curled ends, with the bag measuring in at 11.5" tall, 14" wide and 3.5" deep. You can pick it up from the US online site for $65 (around £35). It's worth checking if they ship worldwide before you place your order.

Find out more at the mandy b. bags website.........

Dolce and Gabbana Wrap-Around Sunglasses

Dolce and Gabbana Wrap-Around Sunglasses
We are simply thrilled that the giant sunglasses trend shows no sign of abating anytime soon (you know how we absolutely despise those horrible John Lennon-style tiny glasses that make everyone's head look like the size of a giant melon). Now Dolce and Gabbana, the dears, have taken the giant sunglasses theme a step forward and made the glasses wrap around the head, thereby providing further protection from those horribly aging UVB rays.

The sunglasses come in black or red and -- eventhough it's hard to tell in this photo -- have D & G in crystals written on the temple. They feature prescription-quality lenses with UV 400 protection. They retail for $170 at Nordstrom.com.........

Having a Designer Handbag

Having a Designer Handbag Ben Franklin would've loved this bag
Bag by Nancy Gonzalez Fall 2006
Owning a designer handbag is not a Human Right.

This country wasn't found on the principle of life, liberty, and the pursuit of Louis Vuitton. During the crafting of the constitution, John Hancock wasn't like "Oh, let me hurry up and sign this little document so I can get in line for the Kate Spade Sample Sale". Thomas Jefferson wasn't like "let's add another amendment to the Bill of rights- all persons should have to right to bear Birkin bags".

Somehow fighting the British for independence has led to fighting the British for a spot on the Chloe Paddington Bag Wait List.

The question of how to score designer handbags, real or fake, is one of the most popular questions on this blog and I've always responded with the standard reply (fake is bad, designer too expensive, go for great quality mid price designers like Coach). However, the more I think about it, the more I start to formulate a very different answer. An answer that I didn't verbalize until I was ask a question by an audience member at one of my recent talks. The audience member asked "Why are so a number of women obsessed with purchasing expensive designer bags?" and I responded that "Handbags in New York are like cars in LA- a direct symbol of status. Since New York (and cities like London and Tokyo) are such pedestrian cities, the only way to show, or in most cases fake, status is via your handbag (watches for men)."........

Cheap Thrills

Cheap Thrills
This the sort of saturation advertising I'm exposed to driving around town. Maybe I'm more sensitive to it given the nature of my job. Personally, I find this particular image cheap and sleazy. No class.

It's Brittany Spears, looking like a cheap star, at the door of a hotel room. In the background lurks the shadowy image of a pensive young bloke, wet behind the ears. The caption under his baby face reads, Do you dare ? (click on image).

Mate, my advice to you would be, don't do it ! Or if you must, at least organise some protection, before engaging in any thrill seeking !........

Preserve That Manicure

Preserve That Manicure
TBF reader Ronica sent me tips products she uses to preserve her manicures:

Sticky (that's what it's called) base coat ($5.99 at your local drugstore). A coat or two of this and my polish lasts WAY longer.

Seche Vite top coat ($7.00 on. Gives a glass-like shine, makes polish last much longer, and dries it withina minute or two. This stuff is gold!........

Gap Silk Blend Mustang Clutch

Gap Silk Blend Mustang Clutch
Ever since I moved in with my new roommate Jaime I've been eyeing her navy blue Gap clutch from a few years ago. As clutches go it is pretty basic, but the key is the the print of multi colored mustang horses frolicking across the bag. Its the perfect sized cluth to grab before running out the door on the way to a local bar.

So of course I wanted my own clutch, but I had missed my chance when the bag was in season. I remember seeing them in the store, but at the time all they had left was a teal blue color not the navy blue. So last week I did a search on Ebay and there it was, the exact clutch I had been hoping to find. A few days later it was in my hand and ready to take a spin the next time I go out.

Yay for Ebay! Has Ebay helped you find an out of season/hard to find bag?........
