Beauty Hacker: Natural Skin Remedies

Beauty Hacker: Natural Skin Remedies
So by now, everyone has likely already heard tradetricks.org's suggestion to use baking soda as a cheap and natural exfoliant. I've been using it every day for a week -- just enough water to make a paste once a week, then diluted down quite a bit for gentler daily use -- and I can affirm that I can definitely see a big difference in blackheads and overall evenness and tone. I even made a cute container out of a peanut jar and some contact paper to make it fit in with my bathroom decor.

I've always heard that anything good for your body is good for your face, but I've never gotten around to actually trying any recipes. So that got me thinking.what other natural beauty concoctions are out there that actually work? Here's a few I've collected after the jump, but feel free to add more to this list in the comments!.........

Why Are Uniforms Uniform?

Why Are Uniforms Uniform?
If someone, somewhere hadn't thought to make team uniforms the same color, we might be stuck watching NBA finals or World Cup soccer matches with only two players and a ref.

It is that color coding, Johns Hopkins University psychologists have now demonstrated, that allows spectators, players and coaches at major sporting events to overcome humans' natural limit of tracking no more than three objects at a time.

"We've known for some time that human beings are limited to paying attention to no more than three objects at any one time," said Justin Halberda, assistant professor of psychological and brain sciences in the university's' Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

"We report the rather surprising result that people can focus on more than three items at a time if those items share a common color," he said. "Our research suggests that the common color allows people to overcome the usual limit, because the 'color coding' enables them to perceive the separate individuals as a single set".

Thus: Miami Heat fans perceive their five white-jerseyed players as a unit in action against five blue-shirted Dallas Mavericks. England's football faithful can track their white-shirted field players against Sweden's yellow-garbed 10. (Since soccer goalies wear different colors than field players, though, fans of both clubs may have to think a moment before remembering which keeper goes with which team.).........

Is It Safe To Swim After Eating?

Is It Safe To Swim After Eating?
New research suggests one reason vegetables may be so good for us - a study in mice found that a mixture of five common vegetables reduced hardening of the arteries by 38 percent compared to animals eating a non-vegetable diet. Conducted by Wake Forest University School of Medicine, the research is reported in the current issue of the Journal of Nutrition.

"While everyone knows that eating more vegetables is supposed to be good for you, no one had shown before that it can actually inhibit the development of atherosclerosis," said Michael Adams, D.V.M., lead researcher. "This suggests how a diet high in vegetables may help prevent heart attacks and strokes".

The study used specially bred mice that rapidly develop atherosclerosis, the formation on blood vessel walls of fatty plaques that eventually protrude into the vessel's opening and can reduce blood flow. The mice have elevated low-density lipoprotein ( LDL), or "bad" cholesterol, which is also a risk factor for atherosclerosis in humans.

Half of the mice in the study were fed a vegetable-free diet and half got 30 percent of their calories from a mixture of freeze-dried broccoli, green beans, corn, peas and carrots. These five vegetables are among the top-10 vegetables in the United States based on frequency of consumption.........

Eco-Fashion Quotes

Eco-Fashion Quotes

"Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury." Coco Chanel.

"I want to do my best to take care of the planet by designing with recycled and eco-friendly materials. I think we all have to start with what we know because it can seem like a daunting task since I feel the world is in crisis. I design clothing, so I figured I'd start there".

"Instead of getting a bolt of fabric that anyone down the block could buy, using recycled materials creates a more individual look".

"Because I work with vintage fabrics a lot, I buy what appeals to me personally and the colors in the fabrics make the color palette.....I also feel that women look better in color than in too much black; pinks, peaches, corals add more life to your face."

Deborah Lindquist.

A Rose by Any Other Name

A Rose by Any Other Name Pictured: Jacqueline Rose One-of-a-Kind Scarf Necklace at Fragments, $260
When it's 100 degrees outside in the shade and with humidity rivaling that of Bangkok, something about a big black onyx choker seems less than appealing.

However, this vintage scarf necklace from Jacqueline Rose is a light, gentle accent to pair with some of summer's gauzier, flowier dresses. Invites you to breathe. And with clear quartz, any color will match. We love this kind of versatility!........

Cole Haan Large drawstring

Cole Haan Large drawstring
still can't get white bags off my mind particularly now that the weather is heating up. This large drawstring bag from Cole Haan is beautiful to look at. I like the nifty little details like the studded hardware, square rivets and steel blue lining.

My second favorite color is the terracotta, but the white really stands out.........

Monique Lhuillier Show

Monique Lhuillier Show
Because Monique Lhuillier strongly believes in making clothes that won't go out of style from one season to the next, Resort 2006 is an evolution from fall/winter; and an evolution of the collection before that. And it's certainly a harbinger of things to come for spring 2007 which will be unveiled at the tents during New York Fashion Week.

The Los Angeles based new mom (baby Jack was born right before the fall shows in September) is not only adept at multitasking (she is finalizing licensing deals to do a collection of handbags, shoes, and perhaps items for home decor in the future), she knows her customers well and knows what they need and want. She has a consistent design philosophy and that is evident in the following observations ("It starts with something I wish I had in my closet and goes from there", "It's all about modernizing old world elements", "I like texture and I like to play with fabric", "You should be happy with the way the dress looks on the inside as well as the outside" (therefore, the linings are buttery soft, perfectly detailed with sewn in undergarments to make for perfect fit).........
