New Approach For Curbing Obesity
"There's been a lot of interest in leptin as a means to curb appetite and reduce weight but clinical trials have had disappointing results. Our studies suggest an approach that should be further studied is one that disrupts the interaction between leptin and CRP, thereby restoring leptin's ability for signaling. We need to better understand how this interaction works and investigate the underlying mechanisms involved," said Allan Z. Zhao, Ph.D., assistant professor of cell biology and physiology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and the study's senior author. Leptin is secreted by fat - the more fat, the more leptin - yet it is named for the Greek word leptos, which means "thin." In a region of the brain called the hypothalamus, leptin binds to receptors residing on the surface of neurons, setting off signals that tell the brain to stop eating and the body to expend energy by burning calories. While obese people produce much higher levels of leptin than thin and normal-weight individuals, they are somehow resistant to its effects. Dr. Zhao and his co-authors believe the binding of CRP to leptin may be the reason this is so. Their argument seems all the more plausible since CRP also is elevated in obese people. CRP, which is produced by the liver and typically rises as part of the immune system's inflammatory response, is gaining favor as a marker for hypertension and heart disease risk, known complications of obesity......... In the first part of the study, the scientists used human fat obtained from surgically discarded normal tissue. Based on a fat absorption spectrum, tissue was exposed to a range of wavelengths of infrared laser light (800-2600 nanometers) using the Free-Electron Laser facility at Jefferson Lab. The scientists measured how selected wavelengths heated the fat and compared the result to a similar experiment conducted with pure water. At most infrared wavelengths, water is more efficiently heated by infrared light; however, the scientists found three wavelengths 915, 1210 and 1720 nm where fat was more efficiently heated than water......... Research suggests that sticking to a low-calorie diet may help humans live longer.
More than a decade ago several researchers, including John O. Holloszy, M.D., professor of medicine at Washington University, demonstrated that stringent and consistent caloric restriction increased the maximum lifespan in mice and rats by about 30 percent and protected them against atherosclerosis and cancer. Human study has been difficult because calorie restriction requires a very strict diet regimen, both to keep the total number of calories low and to insure that people consume the proper balance of nutrients. However, there is a group called the Calorie Restriction Society that is devoted to limiting caloric intake in hopes of improving health and extending lives. Society members, who call themselves CRONies (Calorie Restriction with Optimal Nutrition), have developed ways to eat low calorie/high nutrition diets. Luigi Fontana, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of medicine at Washington University and an investigator at the Istituto Superiore di Sanita in Rome has done extensive research with CRONies, most recently reporting in the Jan. 17 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology that the hearts of people on calorie restriction appeared more elastic than those of age- and gender-matched control subjects. By allowing lower doses, the new approach could also make the therapy safer by reducing the risk of complications associated with immune system recognition that can sometimes occur with frequent injections, as per researchers at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif. Smaller, more potent doses may even lead to lower prices for the popular wrinkle-remover, the scientists say. Their study is reported in the March 29 issue of the weekly Journal of the American Chemical Society. Eventhough popular for removing wrinkles, Botox is also used to treat a growing number of other conditions, including migraine headaches, lazy eyes and excessive sweating. It is developed from the botulinum neurotoxin, the most lethal poison known and a potential bioterrorist weapon. In a medical setting, small doses of a purified version of the toxin block the release of a chemical (acetylcholine) that signals muscle contraction, resulting in a localized, temporary paralysis that erases wrinkles and unwanted muscle spasms......... Smith, one of the few fashion designers to be knighted by the queen of England, took the starch out of modern menswear in the 1980s by fancifully subverting the conventions of Savile Row. His rainbow-striped Oxford shirts and pink pinstripe jackets with contrasting buttonholes are still much imitated by Ted Baker, Richard James and even Tommy Hilfiger. But back then, before the term "metrosexual" existed, Smith's styles were a revolution, albeit one that grew out of a grand tradition of British dandyism. "I was responsible in the early part of 1980s for nudging the British male to wear a pink shirt," explains Smith, who is in L.A. for the opening. "Over the years, guys have realized it's OK to be more self-indulgent with how they look." Take moisturizer, for example. "When people ask me about moisturizer, I say, 'I travel on planes, my skin gets dry, so I wear moisturizer. It's not a big deal.' ". Smith, 59, is a ball of enthusiasm, the kind of character who puts you at ease, a nice guy in an industry not known for nice guys. "We had previously shown that ultraviolet light has an effect on mood that tanners value," said Mandeep Kaur, M.D., lead author. "Now, in this small study, we've shown that some tanners actually experience withdrawal symptoms when the 'feel-good' chemicals are blocked". The research - reported in the recent issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology - involved eight frequent tanners and eight infrequent tanners. Frequent tanners were those who tan eight to 15 times a month, or more than necessary to maintain a tan. Infrequent tanners were those who use tanning beds no more than 12 times a year. The research was designed to test the hypothesis that exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light may produce endorphins, brain chemicals that are linked to pain relief and euphoric feelings, and could play a role in tanning behavior. UV light occurs naturally in sunlight and is responsible for the tanning and burning effects of the sun. Artificial UV light is used in tanning beds and sunlamps......... "Consumers start with fuzzy shopping goals, which become more concrete as the shopping experience progresses," explain Leonard Lee and Dan Ariely in a forthcoming issue of the Journal of Consumer Research. "Because of the initial lack of concreteness of their goals, consumers' sensitivity to external cues is likely to be higher in the earlier stage of their shopping when their goals are more malleable." Based on a series of filed tests in convenience stores, the scientists explain that when we first enter a store, our shopping goals are relatively abstract and thus more susceptible to outside influence. However, once we're inside, we accumulate evidence and a sense of direction. Our goals become more specific and we become more certain of what we're going to buy and how much we are willing to spend.
