Madonna on the magazine W

Madonna on the magazine W
A service composed from very 58 pages on the magazine W of june, edited by Steven Klein, to its second collaboration with the protagonist Madonna, that we see in cover thanks to Fashionologie.

58 Pages are a number of, or if it is a shocking service could be little......

After the incident to horse of some month it makes, the cover tito it "Madonna rides again" perhaps and the apparel seems adapted to a healthy raid by horseback..... a piccante P2o to me, but it is also always a look from cavallerizza!

Lately to the "center of the attention", even if to the end it never does not remain in the shadow, for the attended beginning of the tour, on which little but interesting news run. Here a part of the piccante photographic service.........

Teenagers Who Cut Or Burn Themselves Find Support

Teenagers Who Cut Or Burn Themselves Find Support
Some 500 Internet message boards are bringing together adolescents who injure themselves -- with cuts, carvings, scratches or burns. It is a world that is invisible to adults but of increasing importance to teenage social lives.

A new Cornell University study finds that the message boards give many isolated teenagers a safe place to share this intimate secret.

But although the majority of the postings are supportive in nature, some reinforce self-injury behaviors and could create a "social contagion" effect, the researchers warned.

"Internet message boards provide a powerful vehicle for bringing self-injurious adolescents together, and to a great extent, they provide a safe forum and a source of valuable support for teens who might otherwise feel marginalized and who may be struggling with shame," said Janis Whitlock, director of the Cornell Research Program on Self-Injurious Behaviors and the first author of the study, which is published in the May 2006 special issue of Development Psychology on use of the Internet by children and adolescents.

In an analysis of more than 3,200 postings on 10 message boards with a focus on self-injury (there were 406 such boards at the time of the study, and now there are more than 500), the Cornell researchers found that the leading type of posting was supportive (28 percent), followed by discussions of triggers and motivations (almost 20 percent) and concealment (9 percent). About 6 percent of postings asked for or shared techniques. Most board postings were from females describing themselves as between 14.........

Where To Shop In Japan

Where To Shop In Japan
One slightly annoying thing about Japan - if you don't read or speak any Japanese - is that shops, bars, restaurants, even schools are pretty difficult to find. This is because they tend to be tucked into the millions of office buiidings and skyrises throughout the country. The only hint that there might be a really funky discount clothing shop in this building is a tiny, flourescent lit sign hanging off the side of the building. But it's all written in katakana, so most gaijin would miss it straight away.

While wandering around Harajuku, I've taken to just exploring every nook I can find, walking downs stairs into basements, pressing random buttons in elevtaors.....just to see if I can find some interesting clothes shops.

This has been successful on a few occassions, such as the time we found a ¥390 shop. Everything was ¥390 (I *think* that was the price) - including shirts, hats, shoes, bags, endless amounts of jewellery and so on. My housemate and I decided that we would choose a colour and make a Harajuku outfit based on it from items in that store. Twas great fun.

If you're not brave enough to just randomly walk into buildings and look around, then there's a few websites you can look at for decent maps:.

superfuture has shopping maps for cities around the world, including 10 just for Tokyo. Each shop listed has a short description to it. The downside to the maps is that you can't seem to filter out only the shops you want (eg: clothing), so the maps look quite cluttered with dots for clothing, design, bars and restaurants, etc.........

Attention shoppers

Attention shoppers
Researchers at Harvard Medical School (HMS) report in the April 23 issue of Nature that they have identified neurons that encode the values that subjects assign to different items. The activity of these neurons might facilitate the process of decision-making that occurs when someone chooses between different goods.

"We have long known that different neurons in various parts of the brain respond to separate attributes, such as quantity, color, and taste. But when we make a choice, for example: between different foods, we combine all these attributes--we assign a value to each available item," says Camillo Padoa-Schioppa, PhD, HMS research fellow in neurobiology and lead author of the paper. "The neurons we have identified encode the value individuals assign to the available items when they make choices based on subjective preferences, a behavior called 'economic choice.'".

Everyday examples of economic choice include choosing between working and earning more or enjoying more leisure time, or choosing to invest in bonds or in stocks. Such choices have long been studied by economists and psychologists. In particular, research in behavioral economics shows that in numerous circumstances, peoples' choices violate the criteria of economic rationality. This motivates a currently growing interest for the neural bases of economic choice--an emerging field called "neuroeconomics." In general, it is believed that economic choice involves assigning values to available options. However, the underlying brain mechanisms are not well understood.........

Tanning Ads In High School Newspapers

Tanning Ads In High School Newspapers Image courtesy of www.emediawire.com/
A small study found that nearly half of high schools in the Denver area contained tanning advertisements in their newspapers, according to an article in the recent issue of Archives of Dermatology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

The ultraviolet (UV) radiation used in tanning parlors is a classified carcinogen, according to background information in the article. As tanning has become more popular among teen girls, the incidence of skin cancer has increased among young women. The World Health Organization recommends that individuals younger than age 18 not use UV tanning devices, but there is no restriction on advertising such devices to youth in the United States.

Scott Freeman, M.D., University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center, Aurora, and colleagues examined the frequency of tanning advertisements in 131 newspapers from 23 public high schools in three Colorado counties. All of the papers were published between 2001 and 2005, most commonly in 2004.

Tanning advertisements were found in newspapers from 11 (48 percent) of the 23 schools. Eighteen separate establishments placed the 40 tanning advertisements, 15 of which offered unlimited tanning for periods of up to four months. Nearly half (19) of the ads mentioned discounts requiring student identification or labeled as "prom specials," while two ads (5 percent) mentioned parental consent or accompaniment.........

Absence Of Wedding Ring Linked To Parental Neglect

Absence Of Wedding Ring Linked To Parental Neglect
A social psychologist at the University of Alberta claims that people who do not wear wedding rings are more neglectful of children compared to people who wear them. Further, Dr. Andrew Harrell states that young attractive people who do not wear wedding rings are the most neglectful child caretakers of all.

The director of the U of A Population Research Lab, Harrell made his conclusions after leading an experiment in which 862 caretaker-children combinations were furtively observed in 14 supermarkets in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Caretaker neglect was measured according to how often the caretakers or their charges, estimated to be between one and seven years-old, wandered out of sight or were more than 10 feet away from each other--too far to prevent most accidents.

Harrell found that an average of 14 per cent of the caretakers, with or without wedding rings, lost sight of their charges at least once. However, young attractive female caretakers without rings lost sight of children 19 per cent of the time, and young attractive males lost sight 25 per cent of the time, a "statistically significant" jump, Harrell said.

"Past research suggests that the absence of a wedding ring in North American culture is indicative of a lack of emotional commitment to marriage," said Harrell. "Our research shows that it may also be an indicator of a lack of a commitment to one's family, including care of the children".........

Fashion Designers In Action

Fashion Designers In Action

Fashion Designers perform the following tasks:
  • Sketch their ideas.
  • Draw and cut patterns to create sample garments.
  • Select fabric and trimmings.
  • Combine basic dressmaking and tailoring principles with flat pattern work and draping techniques.
  • Fit and modify the finished garment.
  • Arrange showings for press and buyers when the sample garment line is ready.
  • Compare merchandise with those of the competitors.
  • Keep current on trends by reading trade magazines and attending fashion shows.
  • Visit textile showrooms to keep up to date on latest fabrics.
  • A large manufacturer generally has a Head Designer and several assistants. A number of small firms do not employ Designers but purchase ready-made designs or copy higher-priced designs.

Head Designers are responsible for executive and creative functions. They supervise design room staff. Those with less experience may be responsible for small divisions or specialized garments.

Assistant Designers are generally all-around assistants to Designers. They make first patterns and samples or may supervise sample makers.

Specialty Designers work with other Designers to coordinate special lines of clothing, such as sweaters. They often arrange for styles to be made in foreign countries.........
