Cheap and Chic at Yank

Cheap and Chic at Yank
A perfect marriage of right-this-minute trends and cheap, cheap prices. Yank feels more feminine chic rather than modern sleek but you'll find colors and styles that play off fashion themes without being extreme. The site is a joy with large photos, detailed descriptions, wishlists, gift cards and easy ways to shop by collections or from their ads. Don't miss the sale section where we found tops up to 80% off.

This tank top with palettes would give a little sparkle (yeah we know that "sparkle" isn't a style this fall but whatever) under any of the menswear inspired jackets you see everywhere. And it's only $10.99 down from $44.

Green Leafy Rootote

Green Leafy Rootote
Well even though I promised myself I wouldn't buy another bag while I am semi-unemployed I couldn't resist this bag that I stumbled across in Sweet Charity a store located in Park Slope, Brooklyn. While I was buying it the shopgirl told me it was the last one!

Eventhough I tend to tire easily of totes (not enough pockets, everything falls to the bottom) this bag charmed me with the natural color and leaf prints. As a bonus, when I got home I noticed a sentence in French across the top: Le Bonheur est a ceux qui savent rire. Thanks to the magic of Babelfish I learned this means something close to: Happiness stays with those who laugh.

The bag is called a Rootote by Super Planning Co because of a small zip up side pocket where I keep my four different kinds of lip balm. The three pockets inside are perfect for my wallet, phone and nano. I do wish their was a fifth pocket for my camera, but I guess I can always sew in another pocket if I really need it.

And I noticed when I got home that the style of the leafy print on the canvas tote almost matches my sheets. Now that's coordination.........

Botox Injections May Improve Facial-wound Healing

Botox Injections May Improve Facial-wound Healing
Botulinum toxin, the same Botox used to treat facial wrinkles, helps facial wounds heal with less scarring, according to results of a study published in the recent issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

David Sherris, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Otolaryngology at the University at Buffalo is senior author on the research.

"This study is the first blinded trial demonstrating that injecting Botox (the trademark name for botulinum toxin) when we close a facial wound results in less visible scars," said Sherris, an ear, nose and throat specialist who came to UB from the Mayo Clinic in 2004.

"This study is the culmination of work that Dr. Holger Gassner and I started at Mayo Clinic about seven years ago. The reason this works is because wide scars are the result of the local muscles pulling the wound apart during the healing phase," he said. "Botulinum toxin temporarily weakens the surrounding muscles, thereby lessening the pull on the wound during the acute healing phase of the first 2-4 months".

The trial involved 31 patients who had sustained wounds to the forehead or were having elective surgery to remove skin cancers of the forehead. This area was chosen because it is particularly susceptible to scarring, and because using Botox in this area has been shown to be safe and effective.........

How Religious Garment Defines a New Generation of Women

How Religious Garment Defines a New Generation of Women Image courtesy of Amicalmant.ca
There's no argument that the hijab, a scarf that covers the head, hair, neck and ears, is a religious symbol that visibly separates young Muslim American women from their contemporary peers. But many who wear it say the covering is a boundary that's helping them carve out their own place in the Western world, yet it also bridges them with their family's traditions and values. The findings are from a paper by Rhys Williams, professor of sociology at the University of Cincinnati, and Gira Vashi, a research assistant at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Their paper, titled "Hijab and American Muslim Women: Creating the Space for Autonomous Selves," will be presented at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, at the 101st annual meeting of the American Sociological Association in Montreal, Canada.

"There are multiple meanings to the hijab as a religious and social symbol; it often serves well those who wear it," states the paper. "It provides a clear identity marker at a life-course transitional time, and it provides culturally legitimate space for young women who are formulating new Muslim American identities and lives".

The research comes from the larger Youth and Religion Project - led by Williams and Stephen Warner, professor of sociology at the University of Illinois in Chicago. The sociologists started the project in 1999, conducting interviews and focus groups with Chicago area college-age students who represented an array of cultures and religious groups. The researchers' intent was to find out the young people's motivation in joining the organizations - how they utilized the organizations and how they benefited - which has been rarely studied, according to Williams.........

Fair price hikes vs. unfair price hikes

Fair price hikes vs. unfair price hikes
A new study from the recent issue of the Journal of Consumer Research shows that consumers align material goods and services separately when considering explanations for price hikes. Consumers think it is fair to raise the price of a good when the cost of obtaining that good also increases for the vendor, for example with produce during a low-yield season. Similarly, consumers think raising the cost of a service is fair when the cost of providing that service increases. However, consumers do not consider it fair if the price of a good is raised in conjunction with an increase in service cost to the vendor, or vice versa.

"We show that inherent differences between goods and services can exert a large influence on perceived fairness," write Lisa E. Bolton (University of Pennsylvania) and Joseph W. Alba (University of Florida). "Goods provide consumers with a link between the offering and the vendor's costs, such as the material costs to a manufacturer or cost of goods sold to a retailer".

When the price of a good goes up but material costs do not, consumers infer greater profits and less fair prices. Services do not have material costs such as the price for raw material to serve as a price comparison point against the price to consumers.

Thus, less tangible cost increases such as overhead are not necessarily deemed fair reasons for producers to increase prices. It seems that consumers feel that some costs are aligned with service and not with the material good, and "in the face of increased costs, not all efforts to maintain profit are viewed equally".........

Etsy is where we go

Etsy is where we go
I can't remember how I stumbled upon the website, but I managed to blow a large chunk of time looking at neat-o items that the craft kids have been making in their living rooms. Etsy is a year old site for selling sundry types of handmade goods. Knit sweaters, paintings, prints, engagement rings, and sock monkeys can all be found on their cute little sampler pages. The site makes their money in much the same way eBay does; $0.10 listing fees, and 3.5% of the sale price. Listings come with a firm price for purchase so there's no bidding involved. My favorite portion of the site is the Alchemy section for taking bids from members for commissioned pieces. You too can be a generous patron to a bedroom Michelangelo!.

Digging through such a large amount of handcrafted goods can be a hassle since no two crafters like to make sock monkeys the same way (1, 2). The digging is simplified by a couple of advanced search tools that can show items based on time criteria, geography, or featuring a dominant color. Their Color Shopper is one of the best I've seen, and greatly simplifies the hassles involved with trying to tie together the four walls of a room. Take their flash powered search tools for a spin; they're just as fun as they are informative.

I know that Apartment Therapy covers Etsy occasionally, and the ReadyMade mag did a writeup on them a few issues ago.........
