Handy Band: Underwear Shaped Rubber Bands

Handy Band: Underwear Shaped Rubber Bands
Getting sick of your plain old rubber bands? Spice up your next bundling project with these fun underwear shaped rubber bands. Or put them around your TPS reports and send your office crush a sexy little surprise.

Handy Bands can be used the same as the generic kind, since their whimsical shapes always return back to their original form. However, I have to disagree with the site's recommendation to use them in your hair, since we ladies all know how naked rubber causes tons of breakage. Package includes two types of bras and panties, undershirts, boxers, socks, and everyone's favorite tighty whiteys. Or if the sight of unmentionables would give your boss a coronary, there's also a generically-naked people shaped set. $5.99 for a set of 24 of either style.........

Guilt Cloth

Guilt Cloth
The theme of my entry is guilt ~sigh~. This first piece is a purse made by Victoria Horner, one of "my" DEs. It was made from an antique kimono.

Victoria sent me this bag for Christmas in 1999. At that time my life was falling apart; I'd just gotten my diagnosis, my then husband was divorcing me, my son and I had no money and no place to go. Outside of childhood, it was the worst Christmas of my life. Victoria's bag was the only gift I got that year. In the midst of abandonment, desperation and betrayal, I couldn't stop crying long enough to thank her. I didn't feel like anyone cared about me or loved me and I could never muster the words that came close to expressing my gratitude. I felt so guilty that I haven't written her in 6 years. I guess she'll know today since I'm linking to her (assuming she checks her site stats; I'm still too chicken to write). I can only hope she's forgiven me.

This next guilt cloth is a child's backpack. I made this for my son when he started pre-school, I'd just gotten a job (the fabric came from the floor of the cutting room so I was risking firing) and while things were looking up for us, our poverty was palpable. I just couldn't send my son to school without one; all the other kids had one and he didn't need to stand out anymore than he already did. I got the zippers, hardware and strap padding from a discarded (torn) cheap backpack I found in the alley.........

Flat Feet On The Rise Among Women

Flat Feet On The Rise Among Women Dr. Mark Myerson, Director, Institute for Foot and Ankle Reconstruction
Painful flat feet in adults, commonly women, correlation to obesity have become more common. Flat feet is the most common foot deformity known. In fact, sixty million Americans or 25% of the U.S. population have flat feet. Some of these people may experience problems that limit their activities, while others can run marathons or play in the NBA.

As per Dr. Mark Myerson, Director of the Institute for Foot and Ankle Reconstruction at Mercy, said the problem has become a common one, often correlation to obesity and increased pressure on the tendon.

"Suddenly, something changes, the arch starts to change, there's pain behind the ankle and the foot starts to sag, stretching further (and) it ruptures," he said. In severe cases, the patient "can hardly walk. A tendon transfer may be performed to strengthen the arch," he added.

But surgery is the last resort as doctors always try other options first, including orthotics and braces, unless the tendon is severed. At that point, surgery becomes necessary to prevent the foot from becoming deformed.........

Women's Skin Tone Influences Perception Of Beauty

Women's Skin Tone Influences Perception Of Beauty
Using a revolutionary imaging process, a new study is revealing that wrinkles aren't the only cue the human eye looks for to evaluate age. Scientists at the Ludwig-Boltzmann-Institute for Urban Ethology (Austria) and the Department for Sociobiology/Anthropology at the University of Goettingen (Germany), have shown that facial skin color distribution, or tone, can add, or subtract, as much as 20 years to a woman's age. The study is to be presented at the Human Behavior and Evolution Society (HBES) annual meeting, June 7-11, 2006, in Philadelphia, PA. The study used 3-D imaging and morphing software technologies to remove wrinkles and bone structure from the equation to determine the true impact of facial skin color distribution on the perception of a woman's age, health and attractiveness and is currently in the edit acceptance process with the journal Evolution and Human Behavior.

"Until now, skin's overall homogeneity and color saturation received little attention among behavioral scientists. This study helps us better understand that wrinkles are not the only age cue. Skin tone and luminosity may be a major signal for mate selection and attractiveness, as well as perceived age," says lead researcher Dr. Karl Grammer, Founder and Scientific Director of the Ludwig-Boltzmann-Institute for Urban Ethology, University of Vienna, Austria.........

Plant Diseases Threaten Chocolate Production

Plant Diseases Threaten Chocolate Production
Chocolate lovers, beware. Each year 20 percent of the cacao beans that are used to make chocolate are lost to plant diseases, but even greater losses would occur if important diseases spread.

"Plant diseases are the most important constraints to cacao production and the continued viability of the world's confectionary trades," said Randy Ploetz, plant pathology professor at the University of Florida, Homestead, FL. Currently, 4 million metric tons of beans worth more than $4 billion are produced each year. The global chocolate market is worth $75 billion annually.

As per Ploetz, the three most important and damaging cacao diseases are black pod, frosty pod, and witches' broom. Black pod occurs worldwide and has the largest impact, while frosty pod and witches' broom are restricted to tropical America.

"Frosty pod and witches' broom would devastate cacao production in West Africa, where almost 70 percent of all production occurs," said Ploetz. "In this region, either disease could reduce yields by an additional one million more metric tons per year," he said.

New insights and current research on cacao diseases, as well as resistance to and management of the diseases, will be addressed during the Cacao Diseases: Important Threats to Chocolate Production Worldwide symposium held July 30 from 1:30-5 p.m., during the joint annual meeting of The American Phytopathological Society, Canadian Phytopathological Society, and the Mycological Society of America. The joint meeting will be held July 29-August 2, 2006, at the Centre des Congrès de Quebec, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.........

The Adeo Fitness Companion recently released by the Motion Lingo Company is targeted at serious athletes, skiers and cyclists. Beating Bad Breath

Beating Bad Breath
If you're bothered by bad breath, simple measures often can help. Bad breath often stems from food particles in the mouth, from dry mouth, or from a health problem.

The recent issue of Mayo Clinic Health Letter offers tips to beat bad breath:

Brush your teeth or use a mouthwash after you eat. Brushing is best. If you use a mouthwash, swish it around for 30 seconds before spitting it out.

Floss your teeth at least once a day. Flossing removes decaying food.

Brush your tongue. Brush the back of your tongue while brushing your teeth. Or, scrape it with a tongue scraper, which can be purchased at a pharmacy.

Drink water to keep your mouth moist. When your mouth is dry, there's insufficient saliva to wash away dead cells. Chewing sugarless gum or sucking on sugarless hard candy can help stimulate saliva production.

Avoid foods that may cause bad breath. This often includes onions and garlic. Oils from these foods are transferred to the lungs and exhaled.

Clean your dentures daily. They can harbor bacteria and food particles.

See your dentist or doctor. Bad breath that doesn't respond to simple measures may be related to periodontal disease, an abscessed tooth, an infection, chronic sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, postnasal drip, certain esophageal problems, or other conditions.........

Cool Retro Jewelry

Cool Retro Jewelry
My favorite pink-locked jewelry designer, Tarina Tarantino, has done it again. As a follow up to her wildly successful Pink Head Hello Kitty line (I proudly own the Queen of Pink Jet cameo necklace),.

Tarina has released a new line featuring a very cool and retro Barbie in shades of soft pink and pale aqua. Tarantino, a former model turned jewelry mogul, has been featured here on Techie Diva before and not only happens to be my favorite designer, but also the current favorite of a number of celebrities. So if you're looking for a hip gift for Mother's Day or some hot, retro jewelry, I suggest you check these lovely little baubles out.........
