The History of the Bra

The History of the Bra
The Bra, a man made device used to shape woman's breasts has also shaped the fashion world and modern sex appeal over the years. The Bra is an every day commodity that most women over the age of thirteen can not do with out, they have changed incredibly over the ages, and represent support, style and sophistication. The first Bra resembling garment appeared in 2500 B.C. when warrior Minoan woman on the isle of Crete began wearing a garment that pushed their bare breasts upward and exposed them from their clothing.

The ancient Greeks and Romans also made use of a Bra like device. Breasts were wrapped and flattened to minimize their size as society grew more male orientated. However the use of the Bra changed with mans attitude towards the female bosom and women were at the mercy of the fashion of the day which in those times was commonly decided by men. This eventually led to the use of corsets which affected woman's health due to their restricting nature. Women often suffered miscarriages as everyday use of the corset led to misplaced organs and internal bleeding.

However during the 19th Century women started to stand up for themselves, women began a movement for more comfortable underwear, and corsets were eventually ruled out. The Bra in its modern incarnation didn't debut until the early 20th century when Mary Phelps Jacob created a Bra out of two silk handkerchiefs, some pink ribbon and thread, and subsequently nabbed the first U.S. patent in 1914. When WW1 broke out and women began entering the workforce the modern Bra became indispensable as it granted female workers mobility and independence and from then on it became adapted to suit different fashions. In the 20s women used the Bra to flatten themselves and achieve androgynous figures such as flappers and suffragettes and later on, Lana Turner's prominent breasts in a clingy cashmere top created a demand for fake breasts.........

Shazbot

Shazbot

As well as being a shoe fetishist, I am a hat freak. I have several in my collection, mainly strange ones that I just had to own but never wear. But I do also love the cool range of hats that you can find throughout Retail Japan.

This shop is perhaps my favourite. It's called Shazbot and specialises in hats for young men and women. Their website is mainly in English, but unfortunately you can't purchase online. It's also just a funky and nicely designed website. Plenty of eye candy millinery for you to peruse.

Oh, and yes, the shop does have a points card.........

I heard on the radio this morning that today is the day that people typically start purchasing their holiday gifts on the Internet. In my case, they’re right. I’m seeing prices being lowered and lowered again, and truthfully, I don’t want to go out in the cold and trek through the mall. Instead, I’m going to sit here with my coffee and browse til my heart’s content. Here are a couple of ideas I got while checking out the sale section of Soleas.com (can you honestly think of a better gift to get than shoes or a handbag?).

For my Hubby who loves Euro-inspired designer shoes:

For my Mom who’s going on a cruise soon and needs some casual sandals:

For my Best Friend who still hasn’t found her Winter Purse:

For my Sister who works in the great outdoors and could do with some waterproof boots:

So what are you giving this season?

London Underground Fashion Victims
Fashion Victims on the Tube

Here's this week's regular look at commuters spotted on the London Underground who could be considered to be slaves to fashion, or people who have taken a trend (or something they thought was trendy) and "made it their own" - with apologies to Louis Walsh off X Factor. There's a bit of a theme this week as it's all mostly to do with footwear and ladies jeans.

Overworn Boots

To be fair this next picture isn't a fashion victim as such. You know when you have a pair of shoes you like so much you just wear them and wear them. Well, I think that must have happened with the lady below

Worn boots

If you look at the toes of her boots you'll see holes or areas that have been worn away. Quite how she managed to do this is anyone's guess. Perhaps the pointed toes were so pointed that she kept bashing them into things. I'd imagine that it would be quite hard to get them repaired.

Metallic Bag and Blue Socks

Regular readers know of my personal hatred of metallic bags. (Please, please, please fashion designers stop making the things, they are hideous). However, what I found interesting about this woman is the glittery bright blue shoes worn with the round toed brown boots. An errr, ...... interesting colour choice!

Blue Socks Metallic Bag

I particularly like the way her metallic bag reflects the brightness of her socks too.

Lacy Jeans

To say it's fairly cold in London right now, is an understatement, so quite why this woman chose to wear jeans with holes deliberately cut into them is beyond me. In fact, not quite sure why she ever bought them in the first place, I just think the lacy pattern doesn't work in this example and it's quite hard to actually say why. But perhaps you'll have other opinions.

Lacy Jeans

Technically she's not a Tube victim as she was on South West trains, but hey ho, I thought I'd include her anyway.

Malteser jeans

Quite possibly the most hideous pair of jeans I have seen in some time. Let's ignore the "Ugg" style boots - I can almost excuse them as it's sooooo cold right now. But nothing can excuse someone buying a pair of jeans where it looks as though they have pieces of Maltesers stuck on them.

Malteser Jeans

The mind truly boggles, specially when the whole ensemble was accessorised with a Gucci bag!

That's it for this week. The previous entry for London Underground fashion victims is here and all of them together can be seen on the following Flickr set.

cupcake....
Once again, I am in need of assistance.

I'm looking for a light blue eyeshadow with a lot of shimmer in it. I want a cotton-candy-cupcake-cavity-inducing-sugary blue. Think blue's answer to the darker shade in Too Faced's "Boy Toy" duo.

And since we all know text only sucks....

Since I have no pictures of my makeup on my computer that I'd willingly spread around the internet, here's a picture of my ever growing eyeshadow collection:

Image hosting by Photobucket

Note: The large black pallet and the smaller silver pallet were both gifts given to me by people who have poor taste in colours.

The flash on my camera made a lot of the colours seem much bluer than they really are.

I'm sorry that I have more questions than answers.

PS: If this shows up more than once, I'm really sorry. Livejournal and I are having some issues this evening.

Urban Decay Deluxe Eyeshadows
So Saturday I was looking around Sephora like ya do and I saw this pretty pretty pretty eyeshadow by Urban Decay. It was turquoise and named 'peace' I believe. I wanted it but it was 17 bucks. A little too steep for someone with no job.

SO TELL ME

Anyone have it? What's it like?!?!?!?! Is it worth $17 or should I just buy 'shattered' for $15? Didn't UD have one just like it called 'kiddie pool'? and if anyone has a picture of them wearing it please please show me.

shattered.

First Closet Raid: Mine.
Yes, Sasha’s closet. Ha!I just thought I’d start my Random Closet Raid Series with a feature on my own closet or wardrobe — whatever. Bleh.I’m not particularly keen on what I have in it right now because the clothes in the photo are the only ones I could fit in one luggage since I am.....

A Look Into a Makeover
I’ve participated in a few makeovers in the years that I’ve been a freelance fashion stylist but I’ve always, and I mean always, had a hard time making over a guy. It’s risky, I reckon. That’s why I take my hat off to the Fab 5 for doing it. Yes. I like how most of.....

Who is Rozae Nichols? She’s a brand name now in the Fashion Industry. She’s the Creative Director of the Rozae Nichols collection.Enough with the technicalities and on with me admiring this gorgeous item. Japanese Styling
Another idea came to me. It’s not that recent, actually. I’ve been going back and forth on whether to do it or not, for a couple of weeks now. Well, I’ve come to a decision. Finally. It’s no secret now, I know. The title of the entry basically gave it away. But I’d like to tell.....
