Vogue Gets in on the Reality TV Action

When I was younger, like many girls my age I wanted to be a model. Information on how to actually become one was scarce especially when at the time every supermodel swore blind that they had been scouted. I had to cut out and keep every advice piece I could find in the mags and record any of the one-off documentaries that happened to come on tv. How pissed am I that I''m not a teen now!

Love Your Style: Lykke Li

Love Your Style: Lykke Li
Not one to adopt “style icons” from the celebrity realm I have to confess to a guilty fascination with the sartorial choices of Swedish singer Lykke Li. With a look that perfectly mirrors the smoky, pretty dancefloor of her music, her world makes me want to dance dance dance amongst sequins, stripes and speakerphones.

Would you buy them?

Would you buy them?
Would you pay $345 for a pair of rubber sandals? Presuming your answer is no…neither would I. Well, that’s how much you’d have to shell out for these jelly diamond beach sandals by Chanel (recently spotted on Cameron Diaz). O.K I get it, its Chanel, its embellished with a jewel and If you wore these babies on the beach you’d seriously be strolling in style. But honestly I’d rather invest the money in a Chanel bag. Available at select CHANEL Boutiques. Call 800-550-0005

If you answered yes could you tell me why?

Sunglasses: Shutter Shades For Summer!

Sunglasses: Shutter Shades For Summer!
Made famous by Kanye West, reader Erin quite rightly highlighted that we forgot to include the “shutter shade” in our round up of key sunglasses for this season.

Available in a number of colours, this summer the shutter shade has proved to be the biggest competitor for the Wayfarer. My only question is how the hell does one see out of them? If you own a pair can you tell me…”Do they annoy you after a while?

The Tartan Trend

The Tartan Trend
Tartan shirts were a big trend during A/W ''07 and have appeared yet again on the A/W ''08 catwalks. I know it''s a bit early to start getting excited about winter fashion, but I do so love tartan. The question is, how will you wear it?

Dry shampoo, your new friend

Dry shampoo, your new friend
You know when you just don't want to get out of bed and the alarm goes off and you just keep hitting the snooze button? You hit so often and loose track up time and before you know it you only have 15 minutes to get out the door? Yeah, it's fun right? Well I have a little trick for you, one that I use to get fabulous hair without washing it. Two words: Dry shampoo. Spray a little bit on your roots, finger tousle and tada! You are ready to go out the door.

(P.S. If you don't have any dry shampoo, baby powder works great too!!)

Klorane Extra Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat Extract, $14.99 at Amazon.com OSCAR BLANDI Pronto Dry Shampoo Spray $21.00 at Sephora.com Alright, this might sound a little weird, but you can get dry shampoo at Petco. Earth Day: Eco-Chic Fashion

Earth Day: Eco-Chic Fashion
Given that Earth Day was yesterday, we figured it would be appropriate to browse some "green" products. Even though more and more brands are popping up with organic and non-toxic lines, it''s safe to say that natural fabrics haven''t quite yet hit the mainstream and aren''t universally available. But, if you actually take the time to look online for alternatives to your otherwise synthetic-filled closet, you''ll find that there''s some great options that are stylish and more importantly, eco-friendly.

Misery, Not Miserly

Misery, Not Miserly
Off to buy a new handbag and fabulous red shoes, or how about overalls and a riding lawnmower? Before going, a mood check for signs of despair and gloom might be in order because how a person feels can impact routine economic transactions, whether he or she is aware of it or not.

So says a team of behavioral scientists from four major U.S. universities, whose research study finds that sadness impacts spending. Specifically, people who feel sad and self-focused pay more money for goods than those in neutral states, even when purchasing the same item.

"The tendency is to focus on oneself when sad drives this effect," says the study's lead author Cynthia E. Cryder, a doctoral student at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pa. "Our studies revealed the more self-focused people were in the sad condition, the more money they spent.".

"More research is needed to determine whether participants are deliberately trying to improve their sense of self by acquiring goods," adds study co-author Jennifer Lerner, an experimental social psychologist at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government in Cambridge, Mass.

The study, "Misery is not Miserly: Sad and Self-Focused Individuals Spend More," was funded by the National Science Foundation and was presented at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology annual meeting in Albuquerque, N.M. in February of this year. It would be published in the June 2008 issue of Psychological Science--a premier journal for scientific experiments in psychology.........

Canvas Wedge Sandals

Canvas Wedge Sandals
Platform wedge sandals are staples in my wardrobe. Being very petite, I love to crank myself up with 3-5" heels on a daily basis and am rarely found in flats. I will admit, however, that as I get older, it gets harder to trek around the city in sky-highs around the clock. Aching feet and caught heels in subway grates seem to get less justifiable over time.

Precise cut for sparkling jewels

Precise cut for sparkling jewels
Rubies, emeralds and tourmalines can only sparkle with the right cut. Since early this year, a fully automatic machine has undertaken this grinding process for Paul Wild GmbH. It saves up to 30 percent of the precious material and grinds the gems with greater precision.

Not until they are given the right cut do precious stones reveal their true value. And they only fetch the highest prices if the facets are even and exact. However, the grinding process - which has hitherto been performed exclusively by hand - leaves little remaining of the valuable uncut stone: 66 to 70 percent fall to the ground as dust, while only a good 30 percent eventually sparkle in the light as a precious jewel. But which of the numerous cuts will make the most of the raw gemstone in question? Experienced lapidaries have an instinct for it.

For the first time ever, a grinding machine is challenging this collected experience: On average, it uses 15 percent more of the volume of the uncut stone. The machine has been in use with Paul Wild gem-cutters near Idar-Oberstein for three months, and has already transformed over a hundred lumps of rough stone into sparkling gems. "The machine - a CNC grinding machine with 17 axes - first maps the surface of the uncut stone," explains Dr. Karl-Heinz Küfer, head of department at the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM in Kaisers-lautern, who developed the software for controlling the machine with the help of his colleagues. "To do this, narrow bands of light are projected fully automatically onto the uncut stone, and its geometry can be determined from their curvature. The computer takes ten minutes to determine the image of the enclosed gemstone awaiting grinding, and sends the appropriate commands to the process control unit. The 17 axes ensure that the milling head can move along any desired path and grind the facets to an accuracy within ten micrometers - the gemstones become perfectly geometrical." For comparison, hand grinding achieves an accuracy of about 100 micrometers, or the width of a hair. Hand-polished gems appear less exact, their facets and polished edges seeming to be slightly rounded.........

Walk the tights-rope!

Walk the tights-rope!
I have always been an enthusiastic ambassador for the joys of coloured tights, so it is with a heavy heart that I announce my resignation. That is not to say that I am abandoning tights as a whole, it’s just that I’m a little bored of the block colour variety.

Calypso by Christiane Celle
I may have mentioned Calypso by Christiane Celle before, but it was only in passing and this stylist-cum-designer-cum-boutique owner definitely deserves to be in the spotlight! Born in France and inspired by the traditional clothing of Nepal and India, Celle lived in Manhattan and worked as a stylist for several years before opening the first of her many boutiques.

Increase in age of patients seeking cosmetic surgery

Increase in age of patients seeking cosmetic surgery
The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) announces the results of its 2007 Procedural Data and since 2002, the average age for patients receiving invasive cosmetic surgery has increased.

From 2002 to 2007, the mean age of patients seeking the top ten most performed invasive procedures has increased by two years. The invasive procedures that have seen the largest increase include liposuction, sclerotherapy, facelift and forehead lift. Following suit with this trend, Botox, the most popular non-invasive procedure, has experienced a two year increase in average age.

The aging population and the baby boomers are likely to be the driving force behind these increases. Baby boomers make up approximately 28% of the national population, as per 2006 census reports. Baby boomers fall in the 42-64 age range and the average age of those receiving invasive and non-invasive procedures are 42.6 and 42.4, respectively.

Cosmetic surgeons are seeing anywhere between a one to three year increase in our patients age, said Dr. Steven Hopping, MD, President of the AACS. It appears that as baby boomers grow older, so does our clientele.

Of note among the findings: for the eighth year in a row, liposuction proved to be the nations top cosmetic surgical procedure with Botox injections being the top non-invasive cosmetic surgery procedure.........

Crimping my style

Crimping my style
Oh horror of horrors! Sorry to break the terrible news, ladies, but crimped hair appears to be back. I could have predicted this, really, as any truly terrible trends from my teenage years tend to crop up every so often in all their 90s glory, but I had hoped that the line would be drawn at crinkle cut hair. But no, catwalks the world over have been trodden by armies of crimped beauties - never mind “The Wicker Man” references at Luella, it was the models’ hair that was truly scary.

Teenage girls aren't the only ones who tan indoors

Teenage girls aren't the only ones who tan indoors
Think you wont run into grandparents at your local tanning salon? As per new research, you just might. In fact, a recent health survey of American adults suggests that while 20 percent of 18-39 year olds visited tanning beds, as a number of as 10 percent of those between 50 and 64 years of age and eight percent of those older than 65 tanned indoors.

Scientists at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia analyzed data about indoor tanning behaviors collected in 2005 as part of an annual health survey called the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). Their findings were published online today in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Our results are concerning, particularly given the increasing rates of skin cancer, including the deadliest formmelanoma, said Carolyn J. Heckman, Ph.D., a behavioral researcher at Fox Chase. Ninety percent of all skin cancers are believed to be linked to ultraviolet radiation, which is emitted during indoor tanning. There is a myth that indoor tanning is safer than sunbathing, but this is not the case.

The 2005 in-home interview of 29,394 adults as part of the NHIS survey included questions about indoor tanning in the prior year. Self-reported indoor tanning declined with increasing age from a high of 20 percent among 18-29 year olds to 8 percent among those 65 years of age and older (17 percent among 30- to 39-year-olds, 14 percent among those aged 40 to 49, 10 percent among those 50 to 64). More of those reporting indoor tanning were females, though the division by gender was not as great among elderly adults (age 18-29, 13 percent male and 27 percent female vs. age 65+, 8 percent male and 7 percent female).........

New bacteria contaminate hairspray

New bacteria contaminate hairspray
Scientists in Japan have discovered a new species of bacteria that can live in hairspray, according to the results of a study published in the recent issue of the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology.

Contamination of cosmetic products is rare but some products may be unable to suppress the growth of certain bacteria, says Dr Bakir from the Japan Collection of Microorganisms, Saitama, Japan. We discovered a new species of bacteria called Microbacterium hatanonis, which we found contaminates hairspray.

We also found a related species, Microbacterium oxydans in hairspray which was originally isolated from hospital material. Microbacterium species have been identified in milk, cheese, beef, eggs and even in the blood of patients with leukaemia, on catheters and in bone marrow.

The scientists looked at the appearance and diet of the bacterium, then analysed its genome to show that it is an entirely new species. It has been named in honour of Dr Kazunori Hatano, for his contribution to the understanding of the genus Microbacterium, says Dr Bakir. Microbacterium hatanonis is rod-shaped and grows best at 30C and pH neutral.

Scientists now need to determine the clinical importance of the new species, as similar bacteria have been found to infect humans. Further testing will establish whether the species is a threat to human health, says Dr Bakir. We hope our study will benefit the formulation of hairspray to prevent contamination in the future.........

Britney Spears Reunited With Her Kids

Britney Spears Reunited With Her Kids
Except for her recent release from the hospital the first positive thing that has happened to Britney Spears in a long time was her securing permission from the court to visit her kids.

This is the first time since January 3 that Britney Spears has spent any time with her kids.

Britney's life has certainly turned into a true life soap opera complete with divorces, cops, custody and support battles, drug and alcohol problems, and involvement with some of the strangest "management" people plying Hollywood.

We'll wish her well and see what happens next.

How superstition impacts consumer choice

How superstition impacts consumer choice
Despite their strong impact on the marketplace, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the how superstitious beliefs impact decision making. A groundbreaking new study from the recent issue of the Journal of Consumer Research examines the role of lucky and unlucky features and finds that consumers are more disappointed when a product that is supposedly lucky breaks. Additionally, even thinking about a negative superstition can make consumers more risk averse.

Despite the large impact that superstitious beliefs have on the marketplace, we currently know very little about their implications for consumer judgment and decision making, explain Thomas Kramer and Lauren Block (Baruch College).

They continue: This research is one of the first to investigate the impact of irrational beliefs on consumer behavior in the marketplace.

Between $800 and $900 million is lost in business in the United States every Friday the 13th. A businessman in Guangzhou, China, recently bid 54,000 yuan (almost seven times the countrys per capita annual income) for a lucky license plate containing the sequence 888. Continental Airlines recently advertised an $888 flight to Beijing with the slogan Lucky You, and the Beijing Olympics are scheduled to open on August 8, 2008 at 8 p.m.........

Mood rings. Seriously

Mood rings. Seriously
You know what I really miss that I want to bring back? Mood rings. Yeah, I said it, mood rings. Don't know what I am talking about? (Shame on you!) Here is a quick definition from Wikipedia,

A mood ring is a ring which contains a thermochromic element, such as liquid crystal. The ring changes color in response to the body temperature of its wearer. The color is said, by some proponents, to indicate the emotional state of the wearer.

They were so much fun and nowadays they come in amazing styles. Not the crazy smiley face designs you had as a kid. Think about what a great conversation starter a mood ring could be. When people say to you, "Seriously? Are you wearing a mood ring?" You can proudly say, "Yes, I am bringing them back. Aren't they fabulous?" You will increase your fashionista quotient but 100%!

I would totally wear this. It is not the crazy smiley face design at all. Although those are available on this website. Big Drop Mood Ring, $5 (!!!!!!) at MoodJewelry.com
